At Home Assistance Dog Training

Not every dog needs to accompany their handler into public spaces to make a meaningful difference.

Our At Home Assistance Dog Training Program helps individuals train their own dogs to perform personalized tasks that support greater independence, comfort, and confidence in everyday life within their home.

With guidance from Summit’s experienced trainers, you and your dog can develop practical skills tailored to your needs—all within the comfort of your home.

What Is an At Home Assistance Dog?

An At Home Assistance Dog is trained to perform specific tasks that help an individual manage daily activities and challenges within their home. Unlike public access service dogs, these dogs provide assistance within the home environment and are not trained or certified for public access.

At Summit Service Dogs, we recognize that not everyone requires a dog to accompany them into public spaces. Our At Home Assistance Dog Training Program focuses on developing practical, individualized skills that promote independence, confidence, and quality of life when at home.

Working alongside our experienced trainers, you and your dog will develop task-specific skills tailored to your individual needs and home environment.

How At Home Assistance Dogs Help

Retrieving Essential Items

Trained to retrieve essential items such as phones, medication kits, or other everyday objects, helping individuals access what they need more independently.

Opening Doors & Drawers

Dogs can be trained to open and close doors, drawers, or cabinets using adapted handles, helping individuals complete everyday tasks with greater independence.

Deep Pressure Therapy

Dogs can be trained to provide calming, sustained pressure through physical contact, offering comfort and support during moments of anxiety, stress, or emotional distress.

Assistance with Daily Routines

Dogs can learn individualized tasks that support daily routines, such as bringing needed items, responding to trained cues, and assisting with activities around the home.

How Our At Home Assistance Dog Training Program Works

1

Initial Consultation

We begin by discussing your individual needs, training goals, and your dog’s temperament and suitability for at home assistance work. This helps us understand how your dog can best support you in your daily life.

2

Personalized Training Plan

Together, we’ll develop a personalized training plan focused on the specific tasks that will best support your needs. Training goals are tailored to your dog’s abilities, your home environment, and your daily routines.

3

One on One Training

Work directly with a Summit trainer to teach your dog individualized assistance tasks. Through hands-on instruction, you’ll learn effective training techniques to develop reliable skills that support your everyday needs.

4

Practice and Progress

Continue building your dog’s skills through consistent practice and ongoing guidance from your Summit trainer. As your dog progresses, we’ll adjust training goals to help develop reliable assistance tasks that support your independence at home.

Who Is This Program For?

Our At Home Assistance Dog Training Program is designed for individuals who would benefit from a dog trained to perform specific assistance tasks within their home, without the need for public-access certification.

This program may be especially beneficial for individuals who prefer assistance in the comfort and privacy of their home, do not require their dog to accompany them into public spaces, or have a dog that is well-suited to learning assistance tasks but may not have the temperament required for public-access work.

Whether you’re looking for greater independence, practical assistance with daily activities, or additional support at home, our trainers can help you explore whether this program is the right fit for you and your dog.

Understanding Public Access Rights

Dogs trained through Summit Service Dogs’ At Home Assistance Dog Training Program are intended to provide assistance within the home and

do not receive public-access rights or service dog certification through this program.

Unlike certified public-access service dogs, at home assistance dogs are not permitted to accompany their handlers into businesses, restaurants, or other public places where pets are not ordinarily allowed.

This program focuses on developing practical, individualized assistance tasks that improve independence and support daily living within the home. Individuals requiring a service dog with public-access rights should explore our Owner Trained or Fully Trained Service Dog Programs.
